The manufacturer refers to this both as a paint and as a stain. I am using the solid version in white, and to me it seems to be a thin paint. It is a bit thinner than quality paint, so it tends to run on vertical surfaces. Its thinness means I needed to use two coats for decent coverage, although the wood had an existing coat of white Sherwin Williams latex stain applied 4 years ago. As a stain, the resulting finish is flat rather than semi gloss or gloss, and a flat stain finish was my goal. This was my first time buying paint/stain in a gallon jug instead of a metal can, and I found mixing to be a challenge. A paint can shaker will not work, and the jug opening is too small to use a mixer of paint stick, I had to settle for hand shaking, so it is likely that the first pour will be thinner than the rest. Nowhere on the container is there any information about how long to wait to apply a second coat, or even if a second coat is recommended. But I needed to recoat to get decent coverage, so I guessed at 6 hours. The initial coat was dry to touch in an hour, but the second coat still has wet patches three hours later. It has just begun to rain (despite not being forecast), so I am hoping it is rain resistant despite not being totally dry.

Terrible! We built a new deck. Allowed the deck to fully dry, about 4 months, then cleaned and painted with this deck paint. After 5-6 weeks we started noticing black spots showing through. Now our deck has block splotches all over and looks like a moldy deck. Would have been better off staining or just leaving wood.
We’ll have to fully strip and repaint.
Customer Questions & Answers
I am using it on an old deck with no stain. I plan to use a cleaner. Do I need a brightener for the solid color stain?
Answer: Personally I’ve always used outdoor Clorox. You can start with the semi trans and see how that is after it is cleaned. solid is like painting. I had to do 2 coats.
How many sq ft does it cover?
Answer: one bottle covered our 60×20 deck.
How much does 1 gallon cover?
Answer: About 1/4 of an 8×12 shed. I used 4 gallons for the whole shed
Does this stain peel over time?
Answer: I have found it to be pretty good as long as the surface is washed and prepped.
