Professional Grade Cleaning Kit In A Tool Box For Storage

Top Positive Review

I was very skeptical in purchasing this entire kit for the price advertised, but I approached it with a practical way of thinking: ??I??m a hobbiest, not a gunsmith??. It won??t have carbon fiber rods, it won??t have the oils or solvents you need. It??s not a top of the line Snap-On brand box. But it is quality through and through.

If for some reason your box upon delivery is broken, or parts are missing… don??t be a jerk, call or email amazon, their customer service is renowned, so don??t throw the product under the bus. Don??t man handle the components, and don??t try to make it do what other much more expensive kits do. You are buying this to clean your pistols and rifles effectively and efficiently; approach the task professionally and delicately. You??ll be rewarded with a product that performs well over and over again. And remember, bore brushes will always need some breaking in, so don??t get scared if passing a brush seems a little difficult at first. Make sure to check that everything is still threaded securely on your rods and handles. Also, do yourself a favor if you’re new to this, watch some instructional videos online from competent gunsmiths who actually know what they??re talking about.

It has most popular calibers arranged from bore brushes, mops, jags, and patches for pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Not to mention, it also comes with other brushes (nylon and brass); a definite plus. For me, it??s more than a complete set up. I really enjoy it. The box is not flimsy, and it came packed with exceeding amounts of cardboard and cushion. The box isn??t terribly big, but once you notice how small the parts are, any bigger and it??s just overly bulky. Plenty of room for rags, and bottles for oils and solvents. If you know what you??re doing and you??re not in the business of being gunsmith, then this is more than the ideal kit.

Word of caution, if your barrels are longer than 24??, you will probably need to buy another brass extension. If you??re smart enough, however, and can afford it, buy a long coated rod that??s specifically made for extra long guns.

One thing I wished it came with was a bore guide, but hey, that??s about $10.00 more or so on amazon too. For the price point on this particular kit, you??d be ungrateful to give it anything other than 5 stars.

I’ve been a gun owner for over 50 years (yes, I’m old). Dad gave me my first gun, an Ithaca 49, when I was 8. Used to roam the woods behind our house (deep South) shooting (at) squirrels with that gun, which I still have. My son and I have been doing competitive shooting for about four years now. I have a mish-mash of cleaning stuff, quite a lot of it. I bought this kit because I figured the case would be a good place to consolidate some of it, and could be left at our hunting cabin as a self-contained complete kit for various calibers.

I also figured it would hold a folded Tipton Gun Butler and a 3-pc shotgun cleaning rod. Correct on both points (see pics). I can also get a container of misc brushes etc. in there, some Hoppes oil, a bore guide and a few other things. All good.

Now the bad. The rods are only 30 inches. Why they stop at 30 I have no idea, plenty of rifles and shotguns have longer barrels (including two Anschutz competition guns and at least one trap gun that we own). I had read somewhere about people adding extensions to these rods. So I figured, no big deal. So, I emailed Allen and asked about extensions. Their response – we don’t offer extensions or longer rods, if you don’t like the product, return it. Hm. Well, at least they responded. But disappointing. It also turns out that apparently the Allen rods use a proprietary thread, not the standard 8-32. So of the many rods I have laying around, I can’t use a section to lengthen the Allen rods. Kind of obnoxious. Why not use industry standard threads (I guess I know the answer).

I could buy additional full Allen rods, just for the middle section to lengthen mine. May end up having to do that.

In the meantime, the smaller rod bent the first time I tried to use it (to clean a .177 pellet rifle). Maybe I was too aggressive with it, I’ll accept that it could be my fault. But… I haven’t bent a cleaning rod in … more years than I can remember. I also managed to bend the .177 brush on first use. Maybe I’m losing my touch (wife says, “what touch?”).

Beyond that, the case (one of the main reasons I bought the thing), is kind of cheesy. The little compartments on the lid (a nice feature) and difficult to open and close. They don’t snap closed just from pushing them down, you have to affirmatively (strongly) push down and then push in the on the little latch. Meh.

Overall, for the price, I guess it’s “OK”. Not great, and I wouldn’t buy it again. Next time (assuming I live that long), I’ll just get a fishing tackle box and populate it with individual pieces that I hand-select.

YMMV, as they used to say….

Customer Questions & Answers

I broke my rod is there any way I can order another one?
Answer: Yes

will this clean a 44 mag
Answer: This kit will definitely clean a 44 mag! This set along with my bore snakes gets the job done for me. I would recommend buying some additional brushes and picks, but this is a solid set for any gun owner. The empty bottom compartment is very handy for storage. I’m happy with it.

Does this kit have everything to clean a 12 gauge shotgun and 9mm pistol? I don??t want to buy it and find out I??m missing something.
Answer: I bought this kit and couldn??t be happier. I have many types of bullet launchers and it seems to cover them all. It comes with lots of great useable items. Just make sure you order some Frog Lube to help in your cleaning. Hope this helps.
